“Keep it Weird” is the defacto motto for Austin, Texas. This progressive enclave in the heart of the Lone Star State is home to musicians, writers, poets and filmmakers. Nowhere does the melding of film and music more cutting edge than deep in the heart of Texas.

Austin City Limits

Austin was one of the first cities outside Los Angeles and Nashville to successfully launch a TV series of a live-format music genre. The now famous and ubiquitous “Austin City Limits” established the melding of music with film (in the form of TV). Austin City Limits is considered the grandfather of the film/music melding in and around Austin.Get more information here. http://www.jambase.com/Articles/98739/Austin-City-Limits-2012-Webcast-Schedule

Creative Forces

Today, such Austin filmmakers like Micah Robert Barber and Steve Mimms blend the cities rich musical heritage into film. Whether it be in short films or documentaries that deal with the diverse music scene in Austin, the blending of the two mediums has become one of the city’s signature styles.

Many mainstream and cinema directors such as Gore Verbinski often call on the filmmakers of the city for assistance when a western flair is needed. Even the auteur (and Texas born and raised) director Wes Anderson makes frequent trips to Austin to see how the two genres are being melded in new and exciting ways.
